M irror Mirror reflects how much time has passed since 10cc's irreverent exploits. Beginning with a pointless remake of “I’m Not In Love,” the album delivers downbeat pop that suggests Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton (c. Pilgrim) or Mike + The Mechanics minus the genius. It’s not even a 10cc album proper: Graham Gouldman and Eric Stewart don’t appear to play together on the album. Graham sings and plays on his songs, Eric plays on his, and The Mechanics’ Adrian Lee plays the peacemaker. If you’re looking for a reunion, you’ll have to settle for Andrew Gold singing “Ready To Go Home” (inexplicably released as a second single when “Peace In Our Time” was the obvious choice). I admit, I was a little impatient with “Look Hear?,” which has finally found a flattering mirror (mirror) to stand beside. But both records suffer from being very normal pop records by a band admired most for its abnormal observations. There’s only one dreadlock intermission (“Take This Woman”) and the agitated ending (“Everything Is Not Enough”) to appease anyone in the left-field bleachers. Much of Mirror Mirror sounds like filler from a Paul McCartney record, perhaps not surprising when you consider that Stewart joined McCartney’s band. Had this disc been credited to Graham Gouldman and/or Eric Stewart, I wouldn’t feel so cheated, but by opening with “I’m Not In Love” and calling itself the new 10cc record, Mirror Mirror strains to effect the comparison. Gouldman and Stewart often played the musical straightmen to Godley and Creme, and listening to Mirror Mirror is like watching Bud Abbott in a film without Lou Costello. It’s not an embarrassing record and I don’t expect consummate songwriters like Stewart and Gouldman to suffer silence, but the old 10cc records were far more fertile.
