S heet Music launches an entire arsenal of ideas at the listener -- in some cases during a single song -- as if winning over converts were a matter of force. And if good ideas were gold, this record would have gone platinum. But the fact remains there’s a limited audience for this kind of warped, albeit often transcendent, pop music. The record does represent a conscious shift toward more complicated music -- no doo-wop this time, and even more ideas are crammed into their obscure narratives. Two singles, “The Wall Street Shuffle” and “Silly Love” (the latter perhaps prompting McCartney’s “Silly Love Songs”), remain popular entries in the 10cc oeuvre, but they’re just the tip of the iceberg. “Hotel,” “The Worst Band in the World,” “Somewhere in Hollywood,” “The Sacro-iliac” and “Clockwork Creep” are just as likely to strike a chord with listeners. The band also expanded their sphere of collaboration, breaking up the Stewart/Gouldman and Godley/Creme pairings to bring the best elements of humor and melody together. Sheet Music is arguably their most smartalecky album, but if that’s not a roadblock there’s some great pop music ahead of you.
