L ittle blows against the video metal empire maybe, but not the cumback that everyone expected. It didn’t stop folks from snatching up copies of the latest AC/DC disc, a brand loyalty the band had earned with remarkably consistent product. Blow Up Your Video delivers the goods again: double-entendres double-dealt, salacious wisdom wrapped in remarkably tight hooks, the kind of stuff that makes you stand an inch taller. AC/DC won’t win a Pulitzer Peace Prize for songs like “Go Zone” or “Ruff Stuff,” but they clearly have no intention of going peacefully into the pages of history. And that’s the strange thing about them; their refusal to grow up is what makes them so appealing. They could make complicated music if they wanted to, but there’s an animal instinct at work on riffs like “Two’s Up” and “Nick of Time” that resonates with my inner monkey. Of course, the lyrics are just awful, complete with obligatory eye roll. If another band had written this music, I’d be giving you an earfull. But this is AC/DC and I expect their lyrics to read like the wall of a public men’s room. In fact, they’re probably aiming for the same demographic as Coors Light; maybe they should combine their market research. (“Would you drink Coors Light in a 16-oz can if Brian Johnson wore a different hat?”) While it falls shy of a complete return to form, Blow Up Your Video is a step in the right direction. Harry Vanda and George Young understand the band’s strengths and play them up in the mix, wringing the most from otherwise average material. It’s not one of the first five AC/DC albums you need to own, but it’s not as bad as it looks either.
