T he Razors Edge is the band’s best album since, hell, Back In Black. After nearly a decade of decadent mediocrity, AC/DC found a champion in Bruce Fairbairn who (like Robert John Lange before him) elevated the band’s meat-and-potatoes music into a monument of metal efficiency. It couldn’t have come at a better time; the world needed reminding that AC/DC were still relevant. It couldn’t have come at a worse time; Brian Johnson’s voice was beyond salvage. And yet the rest of the music is so clean, so sharp, that the shredded vocals lend it metal credibility. The scarred voice is a veteran of the psychic wars, as if Bon and the band’s pain was lumped on top of Brian Johnson for him alone to carry. Yet what ultimately carries the day is the music: crisp, clean, riffs that crack like a whip. There’s something electric in the air: a palpable anticipation that, yes, the next song is going to rock just as hard as the last. Listen to the opening moments of “Thunderstruck,” “Moneytalks” or even “Let's Make It”-that’s the red carpet being rolled out for rock royalty. The albums produced by Vanda, Young and the band just didn’t have that sense of awe, the innocent outsider’s eye that marveled at such a simple three-chord trick, clapped its hands and cried “Do it again!” Goaded onto greatness in such a fashion, The Razors Edge rises to the occasion and delights us. After watching our idol grow dull over a decade, this made be feel Young again. Long live AC/DC! (or at least for another decade).
