K ronomyth 24.0: DISGUISE ROCKED... 40 YEARS AGO. O Yeah! Another Aerosmith compilation. (That would be sarcasm, by the way.) The existence of yet another Aerosmith retrospective stinks, and I say that only because there isn’t a word in English that means “festering boil on the ass of an incontinent monkey.” Dick Cheney, you say? That’s two words. Look, I’m not even going to argue the point that these compilations are continually crowding out what actual rock fans would consider “classic” Aerosmith; the UK version selects only two representatives (“Dream On,” “Sweet Emotion”) from their first nine albums. The truth is that the band’s best work, in terms of quality and longevity, began with Permanent Vacation and the decision to become a mouthpiece for professional songwriters like Desmond Child, Jim Vallance, Taylor Rhodes and Diane Warren. Honestly, to their (increasingly diminishing) credit, Aerosmith adapted to the change far better than Cheap Trick. I’m actually more incensed that someone felt compelled to “clean up” the mix on the early songs, as if “Dream On” needed to sound like it was recorded yesterday. Also, the Run DMC version of “Walk This Way” is a travesty of the original. And how do you leave “Angel” off the US version?!! (Only kidding; I hate that song.) Here’s a suggestion: a two-disc retrospective that features Disc One: The Band That Once Rocked featuring the Columbia years and Disc Two: The Band That Launched Alicia Silverstone’s Career featuring the Geffen years. Then you can toss out one disc or the other and have the Aerosmith of your dreams. Lastly, I’d like to give a big raspberry to the idea of tacking two “new” tracks onto the tail of this donkey. If you’re intent on owning everything by Aerosmith, download them for $2; you’re only going to play them a few times anyway.
