I used to try to sing along with this song and like millions I imagine mumbled mostly in the middle. “Last Child” is jabberwock sewage in spots, runs right over the end rhyme and roars like a rollin’ train through some sleazy bayou backwater. One of my favorites from Aerosmith, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers surely tore a page from it. “Combination” doesn’t have the hook but it does jab at you the way a good rock song should. Whether Perry is simply a poor storyteller or intentionally obscure is unclear; the lyrics would seem to shine a light on the band’s travails but reveal nothing.
