I vory Moon is a collection of acoustic piano compositions from Anthony Phillips, the original Genesis guitarist. I wouldn’t call it classical music because I’m pretty sure I counted at least three thumbs, and I wouldn’t call it new age because I didn’t find it that relaxing. What Ivory Moon most reminds me of are the old piano scores that used to accompany silent movies. The maudlin themes and frequent flourishes are typical Phillips, the playing competent but certainly not stellar. Think “God If I Saw Her Now and Played the Piano for Her.” Truth be told, I’m not a big fan of the Private Parts assembly line of instrumental works. Not having to make the grade of a major-label release, PVC let them slip through quality control unfinished, unvarnished and underwhelming most of the time. Of course, some of the PP&P releases are better than others (4 for example), but generally they represent exactly the sort of thing that most artists leave unreleased. At their best, the Private Parts feature pieces of colorful silk, ribbon and lace stitched into a motley suit. The opening “Suite: Sea-Dogs Motoring” is Ivory Moon’s shining moment, a semi-serious work done in the stuttering and melodramatic style of early Genesis. Also included here are two pieces resurrected from an aborted musical, Masquerade. (Incidentally, I seem to be the source for dating the musical back to 1971, and I don’t know where I got the information or the hubris.) Despite a timeline that suggests a long gestation, I’m more inclined to believe the true source for this material is Phillips’ own ivory moon. There’s also a review of this at allmusic.
