Big Country
The difference between British and English rock was no better illustrated than in a cadre of new heroes called U2, The Alarm and Big Country. Their music bristled with defiance and a strong national identity. In Big Country's case that identity came in the form of an e-bow: an electronic device that created a sound similar to Scottish bagpipes from the electric guitar. Though best known to American audiences for the single "In A Big Country," Big Country was a big hit in the UK into the '90s. Stuart Adamson made the final crossing in 2001, and the world's a little smaller for it.
