Progrography

Bill Bruford
With his unusual time signatures and uncanny ability to find (and create) crevices in the music, Bill Bruford is one of rock's most distinctive drummers. Bruford had free license to pursue his unique muse as a member of Yes and, later, King Crimson. After Crimson broke up in the mid '70s, Bruford formed U.K. with Allan Holdsworth and Eddie Jobson, but after one album he left for a solo career. Bill Bruford's debut album, Feels Good To Me, was a fusion jazz album that featured Holdsworth and bassist Jeff Berlin. Though Holdsworth left after One of a Kind, Bruford continued with Berlin, Dave Stewart and John Clark for two more fusion albums, The Bruford Tapes (a live radio broadcast) and Gradually Going Tornado. Generally, Bruford's first four albums are similar to the work of Brand X (whose Robin Lumley produced Bruford's debut). In 1981, Bruford rejoined the re-formed King Crimson, while finding time to release two albums with onetime Yes keyboardist Patrick Moraz. By the late '80s, Bruford had formed a new band, Bill Bruford's Earthworks, which included saxophonist Iain Ballamy and Django Bates. This group made music that mixed exotic sounds with more traditional (i.e., acoustic) jazz, and by the late '90s had undergone a complete lineup change. In between his Earthworks projects, Bruford recorded two albums with his Yes mates: Anderson Bruford Wakeman Howe and Union. He continues to record for Robert Fripp's Discipline label, releasing Footloose and Fancy Free in March of 2002.
