This is where the line blurs between prog and metal, reality and unreality. Black Sabbath's music took listeners to places; not the natural spires of Yes or the kaleidoscopic counterpoint of Gentle Giant, but a great murky Limbo where Heaven and Hell might both be glimpsed. Much is made of the band's "classic" period, which most agree extends to Sabotage. Some stuck around long enough to champion the albums with Ronnie James Dio, others boarded the crazy train and followed Ozzy instead. Despite critical derision, Sabbath forged a new direction in rock with their debut, produced one of the great rock albums of all time in Paranoid, and left behind a paean to pot ("Sweet Leaf") that should be entered as testimony when the legalization hearings take place one day. The rest of it's gravy; wonderful, warm gravy.
