U ntil now, Eno had pursued pop music and instrumental soundscapes separately; fused for the first time on Another Green World, the result is a pop album related in dream state. The soft and muted tones, unconventional yet familiar sounds, unconscious continuity between songs, all conspire to create an album of unreal beauty. Compared to Tiger Mountain, the songs are much more soothing, like the softer passages of Weather Report or Soft Machine. Yet weighed against his ambient works from this period, Another Green World is exotic, expanding the musical palette beyond mere electronics to give the landscapes depth and detail. The two styles clearly benefit one another; “I’ll Come Running” and “Golden Hours” assume a solemnity that transcends traditional pop music, while instrumentals like “The Big Ship” and “Sombre Reptiles” can achieve their effect quickly in the heightened listening state of the short song format. The backing personnel are impressive, including the rhythm section of Percy Jones and Phil Collins, who debut the sound of Brand X on “Zawinul/Lava” and “Over Fire Island.” Elsewhere, John Cale’s rusty bowing gives an added edge to “Sky Saw,” and Robert Fripp turns in a pair of tightly contained solos on “St. Elmo’s Fire” and “Golden Hours.” Another Green World is regarded by many as Eno’s best album, representing a confluence of styles that marked something of an artistic epiphany for the composer. Again well ahead of his time, Eno was able to build a bridge between instrumental and pop music, dream and waking state, that others (Pink Floyd among them) had merely sketched out.
