K ronomyth 10.0: ENNUI A LITTLE YOUNG FOR THIS? If I had my druthers, or somebody else’s druthers (one druther being as good as another), I would have boarded up the entrance to Tin Pan Alley after Ringo’s Sentimental Journey. And yet invariably, inexplicably, otherwise intelligent artists wind up there, from Madonna to Rod Stewart, breathless and benumbed by the art deco baubles of Cole Porter, Jerome Kern et al. As Time Goes By is a pickled oddity in Ferry’s cabinet of cover curios: a step into the waywayback machine done without a trace of irony. Sting in a ruffled collar singing the music of a moldy lutenist? Well, we all knew that was coming sooner or later. But I never saw Ferry taking a serious stroll through Tin Pan Alley. There had been a track or two delivered with a sly, subversive wink, such as “These Foolish Things” or “You Go To My Head;” nothing, however, that portended a straight-faced reading over an entire album. The instrumentation is authentic, alternating between light classical and light swing (i.e., strings or horns), with that inimitable voice dissipating into a dry, studious whisper at the end of nearly every line. Instead of a re-animated zombie platter, As Time Goes By is a parade of lifeless stiffs: “Falling In Love Again,” “Miss Otis Regrets,” etc. You’ll find the old sense of playfulness on a few tracks (“I’m In The Mood For Love,” “You Do Something To Me”), but it’s nothing to get excited about. In my opinion, this disc is indefensibly dull and adds nothing to the man’s legend. Which hasn’t stopped well-meaning Ferryphiles from defending it anyway, though honestly the man could sing the front page of the Dayton Daily News and still earn accolades for it.
