Camel Discography

Camel still soldiers on in the form of Andy Latimer, this despite suffering a commercial drought through most of the '80s and '90s. Originally, the band consisted of Latimer (guitar/flute), Pete Bardens (keyboards), Andy Ward (drums) and Doug Ferguson (bass). None of them had a particularly good voice, yet Latimer's soporific delivery seemed uniquely suited to the band's mystic bent. While clearly a progressive rock band from the beginning, Camel also incorporated jazz fusion into their arrangements, which aligned them with bands from the Canterbury school (Caravan, Soft Machine). By the late '70s, Camel had veered into shorter songs with pop overtones. With 1982's The Single Factor, only Latimer remained from the original quartet. Happily, he continues to release new works through his Camel Productions label, now based in California. For my money, Mirage, The Snow Goose and Moonmadness are must-owns.
