S uch is the rhythm of life that sometimes we find ourselves doing things like writing record reviews from rote. Thatís where Iím at this morning anyway, thinking of dark matters and finding my fingers typing about a 45 rpm single that no one (not even me) cares about. How better to sum up the pain that collects over a lifetime of Wednesday mornings than with this epitaph: He felt things acutely. The world was made for rough hands, dull minds, liars and opportunists. The talismans of childhood gather dust in an old shoebox, and the new magic tricks are all about getting something for nothing or getting away with something that no one else knows about. That magic springs from a different source, from darkness rather than light, and Iím trying to ignore it but God ainít it awful lonely when everyone gets a balloon animal but you.
