The Cars
There was precious little to listen to on the radio until The Cars came along. They were the first "new wave" band to enjoy steady rotation on the radio. "My Best Friend's Girl," "Good Times Roll" and "Just What I Needed" would make enduring fiteen minutes of Bob Seger, Doobie Brothers and Bad Company worthwhile. Visually and musically, there was something different about them; like if Buddy Holly and The Crickets returned twenty years later as vampires. After Shake It Up, Ric Ocasek released a solo album (Beatitude), which pretty much signalled the end. Heartbeat City was a sell-out, Door To Door didn't sell at all. When Benjamin Orr passed away in 2000, it ended any hope of a reunion. Ocasek continues to release occasional works and has had success as a producer (Romeo Void, Weezer).
