Cat Stevens
Although he's not considered a progressive rock artist, the effect that Cat Stevens has had on artists like Peter Gabriel and Ian Anderson is incalculable. (Excuse me, I forgot to add a decimal point. The correct answer is "some.") Beginning with Mona Bone Jakon, Stevens' intricate acoustic songs began to take hold on a post-Woodstock generation looking for big answers to big questions: why are we here? who is God? whatever happened to that lovechild I had with that groupie? To his infinite (according to the good book) credit, Stevens left the music business and put material things behind him, becoming a Muslim and changing his name to Yusuf Islam (Mohammed was said to love cats).
