Cream
The topmost power trio (grouse if you must, Rush fans), Cream was heavy where it counted. Eric Clapton's interpretations of the blues played as smooth as Butterfield, Ginger Baker entered the beloved ranks of maniacal drummers in motley, and Jack Bruce was the original psychedelic spokesman/anchor. Listen to "Tales of Brave Ulysses" or "White Room" and you'll hear the buds a-poppin' on the green early branches of progressive rock. Cream was cut down soon after, but in its stead were left King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Yes and other limbs of tall legend. Baker and Clapton left to form Blind Faith briefly, and all three members went on to successful solo careers. In fact, Clapton has since overshadowed Cream, but I think that's a case of quantity over quality.
