The Cure
The fathers of goth rock, their music was a shimmering (sometimes jarring) layer of sound upon which Robert Smith lay like the inarticulate yearning of youth personified. The Cure, more than contemporaries Echo & The Bunnymen, U2 or The Smiths, did a better job of balancing atmospheric angst with irrepressible charm. It's unlikely any other band could have produced songs like "The Lovecats," "In Between Days," "The Caterpillar" or "Friday I'm In Love."
