I ’m still getting my feet wet in the waters of Mason, so clarity should come with time, patient reader. My sensitive toes tell me for now that Dave Mason (the album) is in line with the contemporary work of Eric Clapton and George Harrison, minus the enigmatic personality that sometimes elevated their ideas. Because Mason was mostly a little-s star, it’s easy to see these songs as workmanlike, intelligent but not brilliant, soft line drives contained to the same ballpark. That said, Mason is clearly a clever songwriter; not Harry Nilsson clever, but good enough to earn the title of singer/songwriter (a title I’m reluctant to accord Jim Capaldi). Songs like “Harmony & Melody,” “Get Ahold On Love” and “Show Me Some Affection” are all solid tracks that, with time, might run through the collective jukebox in my head. The record never rests at one spot too long, changing scenery from country (a new version of “Every Woman”) to barroom (“Bring It On Home To Me”) to electric ladyland (“All Along The Watchtower”). And I hear plenty of “verve and flair” (Rolling Stone Record Guide, Sec. Ed.) in the musicians and Mason himself. Any album that can reach the profundity of a “Relation Ships” makes a case with my inner voice that the artist is tapped into something big. With Mason, I’m not sure what that something is yet, but I’ll keep looking. And while I don’t think this album will ever be one of my favorites, for a few songs I’ll pull this out of the collection from time to time, a status that probably deserves its own shade within the familia laranja.
