T he original idea was a transatlantic duet with David Bowie in London and Mick Jagger in the States. When that proved impractical, the logicians at Live Aid opted instead for an ad hoc video of the pair singing “Dancing in the Street” while prancing and preening for the camera with maximum camp. A reluctant revelation from Angie Bowie in 1990 would add subtext to the pair’s homoerotic hamminess, but you probably have better things to do with your time. The song is typical of a Langer/Winstanley production (lots of horns and female backing vocals), with Jagger’s loud mouth winning out in the battle against Bowie’s more controlled but corrupted crooning. It’s hardly a timeless track, and as a Bowie fan I groaned at the thought of him becoming my generation’s Cliff Richard, but it’s all for a good cause. The extended dance, dub and instrumental versions were simply devised to put something on that other side of plastic.
