Progrography

David Bowie
The patron saint of disenfranchised teenagers everywhere, David Bowie will be remembered by history as one of the 20th century's most innovative and, yes, popular artists. Though his music inhabited only the periphery of what most regard as progressive rock, Bowie defined the progressive spirit, pushing the boundaries of rock and roll with conviction and cunning. Beginning with 1983's Let's Dance, the artist inhabited a place where a resting on his laurels seemed appropriate and well earned. His contributions to music in the '70s were unstinting, however, and his uncanny assimilation of different musical styles (glam, heavy metal, soul, electronica) renders Bowie a genre unto himself.
