W ell, time doesn’t crawl so much on the single version anyway. The cut-and-paste lyrics were beginning to seem like a crutch, though, and conjuring the ghost of Major Tom strikes an unflattering comparison to the wonderful “Ashes To Ashes.” The flip side is a nonalbum track, “Girls,” available in the single edit version on the seven-inch and two different versions on the twelve-inch. It’s not a bad B side, to the best of my knowledge still not available on album, so this is something of a collectible (and an affordable one at that). The piano flourishes and dramatic reading on “Girls” remind me of Aladdin Sane’s “Lady Grinning Soul,” in case anyone’s interested.
