T he single version of “Young Americans” chops two minutes from the elpee version, and I mean “chops.” The edit is literally jarring, abruptly cutting the middle out and clumsily splicing the two ends together. Best forgotten, which is what radio stations and compilations have done, opting instead for the original five-minute version. In the US, the B side was the live version of “Knock On Wood” from David Live (which they mercifully left alone). To date, this is probably the worst editing job I’ve ever heard on a single; I literally stood over it twice to make sure the needle hadn’t skipped. The single was reissued later in the year on the RCA Gold Standard label. More can be found at Songfacts.
