V an Tieghem came to my attention via Laurie Anderson. Unconventional cat, but very cool. The title track from his first elpee is a pastiche of percussion and music, noting that Van Tieghem has some interesting ideas about what constitutes music. Not more interesting than Art of Noise, let alone David Byrne or Laurie Anderson, and that’s where these things fail. Art of Noise threw everything into the blender, blew the lid off it and let things fly; Van Tieghem’s blender isn’t nearly as violent or interesting. “These Things Happen” is simply postmodern club music, not the carefully couched social statement that one associates with a Twyla Tharp production (from whence this came).
