T his is about what you’d expect from a live album called Intermission. Actually, a real intermission would have lasted longer; this album barely runs over thirty minutes. So if you left to get a hot pretzel and missed this, here’s your chance. For your trouble, you get a few live tracks from Sacred Heart (including a real live version of “King of Rock and Roll”) and such fan favorites as “Rainbow In The Dark” and “We Rock.” Not enough to make you want to run out and buy Dio concert tickets, but it probably makes a nice curio for anyone who saw the Sacred Heart tour. (I saved my money for the Strange Highways tour, since they were serving jello shots there.) The album doesn’t even attempt to serve as an accurate tour sampler, with Ronnie bidding “goodnight” to the audience after the second track (it must take that long to count the door money). If you’re wondering what’s on the album cover, that’s a picture of Ronnie fighting Denzel the Dragon, which was part of Dio’s stage show at the time. Yup, I know, that’s sooo Eighties. I heard Denzel had trouble finding work after that, and finally ended up on a miniature golf course in Boca Raton. I’d like to say Dio came to a less ignominious end, but they’ve been relegated to smaller venues as of late. It’s wonderful to see them in a more intimate setting, but such a large talent should never be confined. If you’re on the fence with this one, a new studio track (“Time To Burn”) might push you over the edge. It doesn’t exactly catch fire, but there are worse things to do with your time (like writing record reviews that nobody reads).
