K ronomyth 11.0: THEIR SULTANIC MAJESTIES’ MOST REQUESTED. The earlier Money For Nothing has nothing on Sultans; this is by far the better compilation, containing the essential (if dreary) epilogues On Every Street and On The Night. When the Dire Straits were at their best, nobody was better: “Sultans of Swing,” “Romeo and Juliet,” “Tunnel of Love,” “Money for Nothing.” I’ll probably never understand the attraction to “Private Investigations” (or the aversion to “Industrial Disease”) and would have swapped “On Every Street” for “Skateaway,” but this is still the best single-disc summation of the band I’ve heard. A few years later, this disc was repackaged in a Sound + Vision edition that included a bonus disc of live material led by seven tracks from a Mark Knopfler concert in 1996 and a DVD of videos for each of the original Sultans’ sixteen songs. While UK audiences continued to carry a torch for the Straits, Sultans of Swing quickly slipped out of sight in the US; it didn’t chart, it didn’t go gold, why spend money on something you already had? These days, it’s the better career retrospective to pick, since the subsequent Private Investigations made the unfortunate choice of mixing Mark Knopfler’s solo career with the band’s. How many times, really, do we need to hear the theme from Local Hero? Sultans also sounds outstanding, although my loyal DCD-1015 can’t take advantage of the disc’s HDCD technology. While the disc doesn’t contain any original material, it does include the single edit versions of many songs (“Brothers in Arms,” “Private Investigations,” etc.) as well as two slightly elusive live tracks: “Love Over Gold” (originally left off of the Alchemy double elpee) and “Local Hero/Wild Theme” (taken from the live EP Encores).
