O ne of their catchiest singles to date, “Evil Woman” was the first ELO hit to simultaneously crack the UK and US Top 10 (a feat that “Telephone Line” would soon repeat). It’s a classic “kiss off” track, beginning with the warning “You’ve made a fool of me, but that broken dream’s about to end.” The flip side features the live version of “10538 Overture” that appeared on The Night The Light Went Out In Long Beach. The recording quality leaves something to be desired, but the performance is right on target, including a brief revival of The Move’s “Do Ya” (which they’d re-record for A New World Record). German singles featured a different B side, “Nightrider” from Face The Music. Also, a Golden Oldies reissue in the US paired “Evil Woman” with its successful successor, “Telephone Line.”
