H ere’s a title only a corporate attorney could love: Electric Light Orchestra Part Two Performing ELO’s Greatest Hits Live Featuring The Moscow Symphony Orchestra. No skin showing there. Unfortunately, the orchestra is mostly just for show, answering the musical question “How many members of the Moscow Symphony Orchestra does it take to change the Electric Light Orchestra’s live show into a noteworthy event?” Maybe they have a strong musician’s union in Moscow (they don’t call it the Soviet Union for nothing). If you’re not familiar with the Part Two experiment, it included members old (Bev Bevan, Kelly Groucutt) and new (Eric Troyer, Neil Lockwood) occasionally recording fresh material while delivering the oldies on stage. In other words, intended for anyone still carrying a torch for ELO. The good news is that ELO Part Two does a fine job of reproducing their early hits, especially on the vocals. The guitar solos may be uninspired, but the group shines on the instrumental passages (“Overture” and the introduction to “Can’t Get It Out Of My Head”). You could expect more energy from these performances (not to mention a livelier audience), but if cleanliness is what you’re after then Greatest Hits Live doesn’t disappoint. However, at forty-five minutes, this is shorter than it should have been -- judging from “Thousand Eyes,” a few more recent songs would have been welcome. Released by Scotti Bros. (a better name for a porno production team than a legitimate label), a video of the show is also available. According to my picture sleeve, it’s “thrilling.” Relative to spending all day in line for bread, I suppose.
