N ot quite the twilight of their career, but things were beginning to look dark. ELO’s contributions to the film (and I use the term loosely) Xanadu could have been dismissed as good, clean fun, yet the decision to remain darlings of the rollerdisco with Time didn’t bode well for the future. “Twilight” followed “Hold On Tight” into the Top 40; still, the band is a shadow of their former selves, this time coming up with a sort of discofied version of The Beatles’ “Tomorrow Never Knows” (or a bubblier version of “Turn To Stone”). The flip side, “Julie Don’t Live Here,” is a nonalbum song that eventually turned up on the compilation Afterglow. It’s little more than a pastiche of vaguely familiar melodies, likewise leaning on the novelty factor of synthesizers too much.
