Emerson, Lake & Palmer
As prog rock goes, so goes Emerson, Lake & Palmer. When prog peaked in the early '70s, none rode higher than ELP. As the genre fell into ignominy, ELP's fortunes waned accordingly. Today, the band invokes images of baroque excess, the final indignity seemingly served by Blender's readers in a September 2003 poll that ranked them the 2nd worst band of all time. In a strange way, that speaks to the power of ELP as much as anything. Their music was so intimidating, so laden with a pretense to awesome potentialities, that it frightens people. Of course, prog fans are musical adventurers by their very nature, willing to plumb the most profund pits of darkness, to climb the tallest spires of truth, to dance with the invisible spirits of music in an embrace of faith. Naturally, they revere ELP as a loose rule. ELP may not be your favorite band (or second or third), but they remain one of the principal gods in the great Pantheon, and to assail their virtues is to shake the foundation of the building itself.
