T he advance single from Rock of the Westies and a personal favorite of mine. That crazy guitar and those marimbas get me every time. Of course, the real attraction to these singles is the nonalbum B side. “Sugar on the Floor” is a downbeat piano ballad, kind of “I Feel Like a Bullet” with some slide guitar in it. The song is actually written by Kiki Dee, who had signed with Elton’s Rocket Records two years earlier. It’s certainly south of the Westies work, prompting the question of what Elton ever saw in it that Kiki deedn’t.
