The (English) Beat
Okay, so they didn't beat The Beat to "the beat," but they were right on time for the two-tone ska revival. By the band's third (and final!) album, the crossover to American audiences was complete (they were an English sensation from the get-go, where I'm guessing that other band was forced to call themselves The Beat U.S.). The band soon broke up, with the two vocalists headed for General Public and the two guitarists off to form Fine Young Cannibals. They left behind three excellent albums which, for anyone counting at home, is more than The Specials and The Selecter managed between them.
