C lapton’s first album only generated the one single, but what a single it was: “After Midnight” matched with the Clapton original, “Easy Now.” Despite the 3:15 track time on the label, this version of “After Midnight” actually runs just short of three minutes (I believe they simply faded the ending early). The B side is one of the surprises on Clapton’s first records, although the lyrics are terrible. Probably terrified Steve Winwood when he first heard it, and thus began a long affiliation with lyricists. Only kidding there, but it would have made a good story. There’s more on the A side at Songfacts.
