I f you’re not hooked by the opening riff, you’ve got more willpower than me. There’s an offhand genius to Clapton’s performance on “Lay Down Sally” that seems to embody the yin and yang of this enigmatic artist. The US and UK singles used different B sides: “Next Time You See Her” in the US and “Cocaine” in the UK. “Next Time You See Her” is strictly B material; I still don’t know why you’d tell “the other man” to carry a message for you and threaten to kill him at the same time. I’ve tried this with FedEx, and it just doesn’t work. (Only kidding.) There’s a little more on the song available at Songfacts.
