A galactic snack between Fish and Horse. If you bought Machine Fish, you already felt the rage. What you were missing was the heavy “Paradigm Shift” (shades of Soundgarden), two cool covers and a pair of live tracks from The Abyss (may she rest in peace). The cover of “I Want You” sounds like Pantera playing Kiss, while “Junior’s Farm” sticks close to (and is slightly sillier than) the original from Wings. The two live tracks are from a performance in their hometown of Houston; the studio versions appeared six months earlier on Machine Fish. The sonic fidelity isn’t perfect, but the boys nail the harmonies and crunch the right chords; maybe an entire live album will seep out of the archives some day. The disc closes, in typical Cowboys fashion, with a secret, untitled treat. As Anthrax and Butthole Surfers fans will tell you, EPs can be a surprisingly nutritious source of new music. I wouldn’t recommend this as an opening appetizer because it doesn’t give you a full appreciation for the Cowboys' distinctive and harmony-rich sound, but the live tracks and covers are exactly the sort of holes that needed plugging in the Galactic Cowboys canon.
