T his was my introduction to Gang of Four, in the form of the lovely little Yellow EP. Rather than punk music, Gang of Four played agitpop: a fusion of punk, pop and politics that wasn’t soon forgotten. The 12-inch cover was plain yellow, no history lessons like Entertainment! and Solid Gold, but the music was anything but yellow, challenging the status quo with its revolutionary approach. “Outside The Trains Don’t Run On Time” is one of the most compelling grooves the Gang has committed to vinyl, “He’d Send In The Army” just a step behind it. To round out the 7-inch, the blunt “It’s Her Factory” and a recently polished “Armalite Rifle” were added. The entire Yellow EP was later appended to the 1995 reissue of Entertainment!
