P aralyzed by the high cost of freedom? Solid Gold has the solution. It’s a workmanlike, unadorned record, lacking the brilliant elasticity of Entertainment!, but still unique enough to outclass most of the music being made in 1981. In fact, a lot of the band’s “classic” material comes from here: “What We All Want,” “Outside The Trains Don’t Run On Time,” “Cheeseburger,” “A Hole In The Wallet,” “Paralysed.” True, these tracks run a little thin on melody and occasionally sound unfinished, but these were unvarnished truths being peddled after all. Despite its title, Solid Gold is the least dance-friendly of the Gang’s elpees. Guitars grate, the bass throbs like a dull headache, and the drums march right along to the message. If it’s a more strident effort than Entertainment!, Solid Gold’s is ultimately a diluted genius. When the band concentrates their attack, as on “Cheeseburger” and “Outside The Trains Don’t Run On Time,” the effect is intoxicating. But monochromatic musings are the norm here, sung with a modicum of color against a backdrop of barest bone and sinew. A couple of songs, like “The Republic” and “In The Ditch,” feign toward the funk experiment of their next album. As Dave Allen’s last full-length album with the band, Solid Gold marks the end of the original Four, but you could argue that they’d already spoken their piece on their debut. If you couldn’t get enough of Entertainment!, get Solid Gold. It’s a good album from a great band, and might have been a musical revelation itself if our ears hadn’t been opened wider earlier. In the 90s, Solid Gold was reissued with the Another Day Another Dollar EP appended to the end.
