Gary Numan
This is where the robot revolution gets interesting. Kraftwerk had kickstarted it, Bowie popularized it, but it took Ultravox and Numan to build empires on it. Beginning with the #1 UK hit "Are 'Friends' Electric" and the international hit "Cars," Numan became the most visible proponent of the electronic movement. Tales of alienated robots read like pulp science fiction while synthesizers whooshed, beeped and buzzed out danceable beats. It was a formula that honestly lacked the artistry (and classical inspiration) of fellow pioneers Ultravox, but it worked surprisingly well for a while. US audiences quickly lost interest, yet Numan (like Midge Ure) has enjoyed a long and successful solo career without us. He continues to record and tour while collecting accolades from a new generation of electronic death-dealers (NIN, Marilyn Manson), who cite him as an early influence.
