J ust another sad, immaculate love song, thatís all. Which would usually be the end of things, but Iíve got an ethical dilemma on my hands. You see, thereís a copy of the video for Thatís All on YouTube. Actually, there are videos for thousands of songs on YouTube. Free videos. Without the consent of the companies who own them. And as the people whose mamaís didnít raise them right needed to learn from Napster, you canít do that. Unless you want to attract a lot of visitors, build brand equity, and end up selling the brand to a large corporation for a wad of cash. Now, imagine if a record or video store gave out free, illegal bootlegs to its customers just to get them to come into the store and buy something. Or, perhaps more to the point, allowed other people to come into their store and do that, even to the extent of helping them set up a table in the store. Folks, thereís no grey area here: copyright protection of intellectual capital is black and white, legal 101. Thatís not to say I didnít wrestle with the idea of peppering my site with video links, but a sense of justice prevailed. So why the temptation at all? As a memorial to Tower and everyone who played by the rules and lost. And because your mama raised you better.
