A little toad leapt from a cool, green glade and marvelled at the wonder of Three. Three figures caught in the bright lights (squinting bought you two more types), three black circles trapping exotic worlds. A fourth took you to a new dimension or back to the beginning, depending on what side of the pond you lived on. The toad thought of two times past, when leisure let him watch the skies and dance on volcanoes, and a sensible emptiness filled him. Burrurrurpp. Or perhaps it was a green dragonfly from this morning, half-digested. Three albums had passed since his last adventure outside the glade, and “genesis” chirrupped the crickets, “genesis” buzzed the waspish wings of innumerable insects, “genesis” croaked the green, beautiful bullfrogs. It hadn’t sounded like this last time, and the toad wondered what he’d missed. There had been And Then There Were Three, and you could see the numerology planting a foot down already, but only “Follow You, Follow Me” made it this far. This trio lingers at strange altars labelled Duke and Abacab (“Or commercial kiosks made to look like altars,” mused the toad). A link to the old Church of Genesis appears on side three, no wonder, with a doorway back to Lamb and Wind, keeping the flame alive in the Afterglow of evening. But the toad’s adventure didn’t begin in earnest until the new revelations arrived: “Paperlate,” “Me And Virgil,” “Evidence of Autumn.” In the waning light of day, he’d heard the words he’d waited for, new news to tuck underneath his leg and take back to the glade. If, by peradventure, you find a tattered copy of the toad’s report tucked into a tree trunk, unwrinkle it and read it. Old or new, it’s all good too, and you can say I toad you so.
