T his has always been an interesting compilation because it broke with tradition and featured the best of George Harrison the songwriter rather than George Harrison the solo artist (as earlier releases from John and Ringo had). Half an album of George’s songs with The Beatles, half an album of hits recorded since then, does it sell his solo career (which had enjoyed its share of success) short? Maybe, but let’s face it, wouldn’t you rather hear “While My Guitar Gently Weeps” than “This Guitar (Can’t Keep From Crying)?” And since EMI/Capitol seemed determined to capitalize on The Beatles’ continued popularity regardless of whether the member’s solo careers warranted the retrospective, limiting this to the choicest solo cuts hides any potential weaknesses. At least on this album, George’s solo work holds its own with The Beatles, which is more than can be said for Blast From Your Past or Shaved Fish. It’s true that The Best of George Harrison isn’t a helpful compass, but if you’re not familiar with songs like “What Is Life” or “Give Me Love - (Give Me Peace On Earth),” you’re in for a neat surprise. A career-wide retrospective is overdue, and no doubt forthcoming; let’s hope they follow this precedent and not exclude the best band in the world when picking the best of George Harrison.
