T he Golden Palominos are always a mixed bag. Sometimes they feel like a pair of nuts, sometimes they don’t. In the past, what worked in their favor were some pretty nutty nuts: Michael Stipe, John Lydon, Arto Lindsay, Jack Bruce. Here, it’s Kramer vs. Kidney. And the winner is YOU, the listener! (That’s right. You’re the winner. Just for listening. Thanks for coming. Thanks for shaking the Salty Genie’s hand. That’s what a winner feels like.) The notion that new york city’s no wave/new wave all-stars would make the musical equivalent of neopolitan ice cream has always troubled me. I expect rocky road or caramel fudge, and instead get a mix of chocolate and vanilla with a strip of strawberry at the end. Not that everything has to be Bill Laswell’s brain-poking circus on a par with Praxis, but I’m disappointed that A Dead Horse never tries to buck you. With Robert Kidney as the cool cowboy and Amanda Kramer as the bored angel, it’s “Silver Bullet” and “Buenos Aires” all under again. In looking for a reference point outside of Visions, I keep coming back to Victor Krummenacher (yes, THAT Victor Krummenacher) on the Kidney side and Throwing Muses/Breeders produced by Don Dixon on the Kramer side. Maybe that’s enough to intrigue you. Maybe my calculated non-use of the word “enervating” alarms you. Hard to say. But there are plenty of wild places out there like Experimental Dental School where a Worrellian, Laswellite or Skopelitic might linger and learn more.
