A nd so Gordon Haskell, known as The Guy Who Sang “Cadence and Cascade” lo these 30 years, suddenly became Gordon Haskell, The Guy Who Sang “How Wonderful You Are.” That five of his fifteen minutes of fame should be deferred for so long, and in such a different setting, is serendipity squared. Haskell, to we proggy types, is the wide-eyed acolyte who served at prog’s altar for a half-dozen songs from the King. Duly footnoted and then filed under anonymity for an eternity. Only fate had different plans, taking Haskell on a course in which he honed his skills as a guitarist and developed a rich, smoky baritone that suited his reinvention as a jazz balladeer. Harry’s Bar is full of soulful, jazzy standards that suggest a cross between James Taylor and Tony Bennett. Honestly, “How Wonderful You Are” isn’t the best song on here; it sounds like a slow, jazzy reinterpretation of Lionel Richie’s “Hello.” “Roll With It” basically repeats the exercise. But along the way Haskell hits a lot of the right notes as a gracious, worldly balladeer. “All In the Scheme of Things” and “There Goes My Heart Again” are aces; wouldn’t have surprised me a bit if they turned out to be classic Johnny Mercer tunes or something. Harry’s Bar is about as different from King Crimson as psychedelic soda pop is from a glass of good port. Haskell is the very model of mellow, unhurried and aged to perfection. The backing band of Paul Yeung, Pete Stroud and Sam Kelly smolders behind him, with Yeung’s sax occasionally catching fire. His has certainly been the road less traveled; the arrival of Harry Bar’s confirmed that the potholes and detours were well worth the Haskell.
