I have this on a tape cassette, which I’m pretty sure is the preferred medium for music in Hell. Lyrics in tiny little type, really crappy sound quality that just gets worse with age, extraneous noise like popping… yeah, that’s gotta be the way to go way down low. At the moment, I’m straining to hear “Bodily Corrupted” or its shadow still clinging desperately to the magnetic tape. The good news is, this tape got so crappy because I played it so often. I actually like death metal (which this is, in case the song titles weren’t obvious enough), probably because I liked punk music as a kid. Death metal, by way of distinction, makes a pretense to musicianship that punk doesn’t -- otherwise the two are pretty similar. Now some death metal bands are better than others, and (on here anyway) Gorguts isn’t one of the better ones. They did get better (so did Type O Negative), but I’d concede the upper skeletal hand to Death (whose James Murphy makes a cameo on “Inoculated Life”), Sepultura and Atrocity for now. Lyrically, Considered Dead couldn’t be considered poetry. There is end rhyme here (“maggots” does rhyme with “rot” for example) but not much that made straining to read the blurry black type worth the headache-inducing exercise. For reasons I can’t explain, trying to match the lyrics with the vocals being sung at the time is like following those Bach cantatas in Latin, with the exception that I’ve never heard a Bach cantata belched out. At least not yet. As for the songs (hold your hat), they all sound the same. They’re supposed to; it’s death metal. The guitar solos are all right, sort of like Dick Dale stuck in an episode of The Twilight Zone, while the rest of the band smashes their way through the material, pulverizing it into menacing mush. A couple acoustic guitar pieces also slip in (e.g., “…And Then Comes Lividity”), obvious nods to the original stringed serpent, Tony Iommi. That mystery explained, we’ll move on to today’s vocabulary builder. Lividity is the state of being livid, which is to say black and blue as from a bruise. Disincarnated and Rottenatomy are not actual words, so don’t try working them into your conversations (actually, I’d avoid death and rotting flesh as points for conversation altogether). Likewise, hematological is not a word to the best of my knowledge. In the context of the title “Hematological Allergy,” it would seem to suggest an allergic reaction to the study of blood (hematology), which isn’t particularly terrifying (unless you’re a phlebotomist). A “hemal allergy” (or, if you prefer, “hematal allergy”) would be the correct way to refer to a blood allergy, I would think. Likewise, Gorguts isn’t an actual word. The band’s name is a contraction of “gore” and “guts” (they’re from Canada, by the way, since no American to my knowledge has ever used those two words in the same sentence).
