Grateful Dead
This is the part where I'd tell you that the Grateful Dead are the best band above or below earth, only I'm not a Dead Head. For years, I struggled to hear what others heard, only to come away empty headed. There are albums that hold a special place in my heart today--American Beauty, Aoxomoxoa, Workingman's Dead, Terrapin Station--but nothing that would forge a fealty to follow them across country. I don't consider the Dead a progressive rock band, but they share many of the same musical sensibilities (e.g., elements of psychedelia and, later, jazz). For the most part, they inhabit their own musical world, defying easy categorization, digesting music as an organism might and converting it into life-giving gasses. Their fans remain the equivalent of musical freemasons, ensuring that the spirit of the Dead remains alive, and that alone should inspire some faith in all of us.
