K ronomyth Eighteen, Book of the Dead. Before the curtain cloaked the sun for six long years, there came the dappled sunlight of Reckoning and the electric burst of Dead Set. The source of the light, some said, was San Francisco and New York. The songs rolled easy in the last hours before the big sleep: soft drums thump to sticks and bones, piano keys tinkle in a toast to the past, guitar strings strum and dance, and the bass bumps merrily along. As comfortable as old jeans they come: dire wolf, cassidy, china doll, deep elem blues... new old songs and old new songs since nothing is old or new to the dead. They sense everything, see nothing since eyes can lie, and communicate in a language that only a deadhead can hear. This afternoon, sitting down with the dead on the sofa, I knew that I still didnít get them, but Iím getting there. They left us something to mull over here: old scrolls that roll easy out of the speakers. And these days of reckoning sustained us all, until the darkness ended and the dead rose again.
