T his is what constitutes a Dead single: a song that crept quietly into the company of the Top 100 and then slipped out again. Not that this version of “Sugar Magnolia” from Europe ’72 was destined for immortality; it adds little to the original version found on American Beauty. It is interesting to note the separation between the main body of the song and the closing segment (subtitled “Sunshine Daydream” among Dead aficionados), here played at a faster tempo with an audible (and, unfortunately, Deanlike) “Yeaagghh” to usher it in. For more on this and other Beauties, hasten thee to David Dodd’s web site for annotated Dead lyrics.
