E ar candy for the ecstasy set. At first, these pills all looked the same to me, but then I started to hear the colors. The fat bass grooves, the complex guitar parts and Shaun Ryder’s vocals are absurdly catchy. It’s a filthy record but it’s also fantastically fun: “Dennis and Lois,” “Step On,” “Kinky Afro.” Happy Mondays are a carnival midway come to life. The colors are lurid and brilliant, the sounds are jumbled together, the whole thing a tacky land of enchantment. Pills ‘N’ Thrills and Bellyaches is psychedelic music for a new generation. It’s sexy, greasy, shameless, soulful and sinful. Now ecstasy isn’t my poison, but even without purple and orange lights humping my eyesockets I can feel the groove. If “Step On” stopped you in your tracks, you’ll be hooked on Pills. Happy Mondays thug the club sound and create a funky slacker hybrid that’s hilarious. But the band clearly belongs to the serious and musically studious side of the punk family (Lou Reed, Buzzcocks, etc.). You can sit down and really listen to a track like “Harmony” and take something different away from it every time. This album stoned me in a way that few albums do. Maybe BloodSugarSexMagic and Nina Hagen’s Fearless. Those were freaky albums. So is Pills. Freakysexy greasygrimy slinkyfunky music.
