I t’s 3:30 in the morning, and it always seems to be 3:30 in the morning when I listen to Harold Budd. Something about his music demands the stillness, the quiet that exists when the world is asleep and the sea breezes slip over the land unseen. And so from room to room I roam without calling any one my home. Pacing in “The Room of Corners,” studying a crystal vision of David Bowie’s moody electroteutonics in “The Room of Stairs,” it’s all of a peaceful piece to me. The inspiration for The Room appears to be a series of events culminating in the discovery of a museum in Italy. Each room captures a side of Budd’s musical personality, like watching light dance in the different facets of a brilliant gem (groan if you want to, but at least I’m not in bed staring at the ceiling and imagining shapes in the plaster swirls). As such, it functions as a sort of sampler (although the composer has since honed his vision), whether it’s “The Room of Mirrors,” the shadows of a Pavilion seen from “The Candied Room” or The Pearl’s distorted rumblings spotted in “The Room of Ancillary Dreams.” Every room has its own personality and yet each is connected to the same corridor of artistry. It’s a spectrum of expression within a single band of color, where the graceful (“The Room of Oracles”) and the awkward (“The Room of Accidental Geometry”) are so only in relation to The Room, and might otherwise be filed under the same inscrutable indigo. If some critics have called this work predictable, pity them their poor English. Exemplary is what it is, where the best of Budd’s artistry is neatly housed. Incidentally, I have no idea how this ended up on Atlantic Records. Did somebody lose a bet?
