W reckless Eric was one of the Lovable Scruffs from Stiff whose irreverent sense of humor and strong English accent conspired to make him a minor discovery. Same could be said for Ian Dury, who managed more hits somehow. Eric Goulden didn’t harbor any illusions about his commercial fate. In fact, the decision to release albums as the Len Bright Combo, Captains of Industry and, here, The Hitsville House Band is a tacit admission that no matter what wreckless thing Eric did, it really didn’t matter. I entered late in the story at 12 O’Clock Stereo, a coarse and clever collection of lo-fi rock songs that, like so many Stiff artists, sounds like it could have been made by an eccentric in the early days of rock & roll. As for Goulden’s voice, imagine if Nick Lowe pinched his nostrils shut with his fingers and then swallowed something terrible-tasting. Pretty it ain’t, but he atones for it with great lines: “She was a beautiful girl in an ugly world / Almost out of my class / But she had one eyeball that would wander around / And I had two that were glued to her ass.” Musically, Eric is as apt to lift a line as Lowe, but his rough and randy delivery makes it less of a crime. The Hitsville House Band knows they’re not anywhere near Hitsville anymore, so they’re free to write songs about aliens with STDs (“Miriam”), pig farmers pretending to be rock stars and the usual country drunks. It’s all rough around the edges, so don’t expect to fall in love with this immediately, but over time it’s as entertaining as most of the Stiff rockabilly ventures.
